I thought that I was the only one with stinky smelly towels but after a quick google search, I found that was not the case.I recently had the opportunity to review a great new product called Smelly Towel. Smelly Towel Cleaner is designed to remove odors from towels and laundry. The first thing I noticed upon opening the bottle was the fresh citrus scent.
I had a big pile of towels waiting to be cleaned (like always) so I put it to the test. I loaded up the old washing machine with towels along with 1 tbsp of Smelly Towel. When the towels came out, they smelled fresh. To use Smelly Towel, you just use it in place of your regular detergent and run the washing machine on the hot water cycle. For the more extreme cases, you can soak your laundry for up to two hours.
Why do Towels Smell?:
"Overuse of detergents, using fabric softener and/or using only low water temperatures for washing will cause odor in your washer. The odor-causing residue and mold spores are transferred to towels and clothing and are impossible to remove until the washer has been cleaned. Towels are more plush than clothing therefore absorb more mold spores. Also, towels are used near the face and when wet so odor is noticed more."
Why Smelly Towel may be your solution
It is designed to remove mold spores from towels and clothing so they not only smell clean, they are clean.
About Smelly Towel
Smelly Towels is made by Smelly washer and like Smelly Washer, Smelly Towel is an all natural powder. The difference between the products is..."Smelly Washer Cleaner is for an empty washer and Smelly Towel is for a washer with towels and clothing in it. In short, Smelly Towel Cleaner was made specifically for towels and clothing".
Where to purchase Smelly Towel

My boyfriend tends to mix the dogs blanket with out laundry, so not only are our clothes covered in black dog hair, they also smell like dog. He's not allowed to help with laundry anymore...which was probably his plan to begin with :)

I have a HE front loading washing machine and we tend to forget to leave the door open so it can dry out. Talk about smelly clothes if you leave a load in there over night. It is embarassing.

My husband has been complaining for some time that his tee shirts smell. I have recently noticed an odor in our towels too. Yuck.
I learned that over time, detergent and fabric softener build up in the machine causing bad odors in clothes.
Bleach or vinegar spilled on rubber water hoses will cause deterioration and eventually a ruptured hose to flood the laundry area.
Smelly Washer Cleaner has been extensively tested as safe for use with septic systems as it doesn't harm the bacteria necessary for breakdown in a septic system.
I washed a load of clothes and thought they were clean. I dried them and put them away. When I wore a pair of jeans, I kept noticing a moldy smell all day - YUCK -- I worried non stop about someone else noticing until I could get home and find the clothes and rewash them!!

Unfortunately, I'm totally absent-minded. So many times I'll wash a load of laundry then forget about it completely for a day or two. By then the mildewy smell has set in. I would SO benefit from this product! Even after another wash cycle, sometimes my smelly towels retain that mildewy funk.

I learned that After you’re done doing laundry, don’t be so quick to slam the door or lid. Leave them ajar for a few hours to allow any excess water to evaporate. On a front loader, also pull the detergent drawer out a bit to allow it to dry.

I don't know if this counts as a smelly laundry story, but seriously, how many times do I have to ask that wet towels get hung upon the shower curtain rod? Am I the only one who smells what happens when you don't?

My smelly laundry story ... I used to go to a hot yoga class where it was very stinky b/c everyone sweat so much and the doors were closed and the heater was on. After one class I left my stinky towel from class in my car overnight. Oops! It smelled awful the next day!

The third not-so-common reason for clothes washer smells is using only cold water for washing. Using cold water is fine but makes preventive maintenance very important. A weekly hot soak will dissolve residue not dissolved by cold water. This is a perfect chance to soak soiled dishrags, etc.
This is important for me since I mainly wash in cold water. I learned something new.

I have a top loading HE washer. While it is great on saving water and energy, they do tend to get stinky. Also, I am a big fan of washing my clothing in cold water and was surprised to learn this from the Smelly Washer site: "The third not-so-common reason for clothes washer smells is using only cold water for washing. I have a real problem with a smelly washer. When I got my front loader 3 years ago, I was so excited to get a fancy machine. I had no idea the smelly problems that would come up. so disgusting! I am resentful that I was sold a product that could have this problem. While i understand that overuse of detergents is an issue, the other issue in my opinion is clearly the build up that occurs in the rubber ring. gross!
I guess it also doesn't help that I sometimes forget to take the clothes out promptly.

I was surprised to find out that The main cause of stink is the overuse of detergents, I would think the more cleaners you use the cleaner clothes would be.
I wash my clothes separate from my husbands because he works so hard and I am afraid that his hard work odor with transfer to my clothes.
I didn't realize some people think that fabric softener contains carcinogens! Yikes :(

My sad little stinky laundry story: My stepdaughter had her friend over for the weekend. He had just taken a shower and has longer hair. After he dried off his hair, he was like, "OMG. Yuck!" I couldn't imagine what was wrong. I asked him. He said, "Gross - this towels smells gross and now my hair smells like it." Mortified. Seriously. He could have used some manners, but seriously - that was awful. Now I go through my stacks of towels and sniff them before guests are coming. I knew they were clean, but that is so gross and embarrassing!! I am excited to hear there is such a product as this one out there!

I learned that fabric softener is dispensed in the rinse cycle of a washing machine and it leaves a residue on the inside of the outer tub. Odor-causing mold grows on this residue and is transferred to towels and clothing. They recommend using dryer sheets or dryer balls instead!
Smelly story: Our water is smelly anyway, but the other day, I was soaking some laundry in an oxygen product (trying to get some stains out, you see). Well, it wasn't in there long, but I turned the machine back on and it was agitating the load. My husband walked by the laundry room and just about threw up all over himself. I guess no more soaking! lol

I have accidentally left clothes in the washer too long, then dried them thinking it would be okay. It wasn't!
Smelly Washer recommends the use of dryer balls. I've thought about getting some of those.

The main cause of front load or top load stink is the overuse of detergents. Generally, we’re only removing sweat and perfume from our clothing so it’s necessary to use very minimal amounts.
Smelly Laundry Story is when we went to the beach and had lots of smelly wet towels. I forgot about them and found them in a bag a week later. They were very smelly and it was hard to get the smell out.

The frequency of use depends upon the amount of detergent used, if fabric softener is used and the temperature of water generally used after cleaning your washer. That being stated - many customers like to do maintenance cycles. If any type of maintenance cycle is done only a half-teaspoon of SmellyWasher is needed in a normal hot soak to remove any residue.
Liquid fabric softener is terrible for clothing, who knew???
